1. MUSEUM / GALLERY CONSERVATOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
Requirements:
- University degree, diploma or graduate certificate in a recognized conservation program or related field preferably in Fine Arts or Sciences. In particular, the following subjects may be helpful:
- archaeology/archive and museum studies;
- art conservation/art history;
- ceramic and glass;
- materials science/technology/metallurgy
- paper conservation/book arts;
- textile technology;
- minimum one (1) year of experience handling arts, artefacts or specimens preferably working in a museum environment;
- a strong interest in and knowledge of art/historical artefacts;
- computer literacy;
- excellent team work, interpersonal and communication skills;
Responsibilities:
The actual work carried out by conservators can vary depending on the role, but may include:
- examining artefacts, both visually and using scientific tools;
- maintaining full conservation records by writing up notes on the object’s condition and any previous restoration work that has been done;
- monitoring and recording display and storage conditions with the aim of keeping objects in a stable condition;
- working out creative solutions to clean, support and repair sensitive objects;
- keeping up to date with the latest conservation techniques and practices, through research and training;
